In October, Ancestry.com reported on their blog that pop singer Justin Bieber, actor Ryan Gosling, and singer Avril Lavigne are related. The article traces the descent of these three celebrities from early Quebec settlers Mathurin Roy and Marguerite Biré. As the following graphic illustrates, Ryan Gosling is Justin Bieber’s 11th cousin, 1x removed, and Avril Lavigne is Justin’s 12th cousin.
The article goes on to point out that in addition to being related to Ryan Gosling and Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber is also related to pop-diva Celine Dion through another set of early Quebec settlers, Jacques Vezina and Marie Boisdon. Through their mutual descent from them, Justin and Celine are 10th cousins, 3x removed. Although not specifically mentioned in the article, it would appear that Ryan Gosling and Avril Lavigne may have a connection to Celine Dion as well, as the Dion surname appears in the ancestries of both of these celebrities, which can be seen in the graphic above.
Although this is not the most relevant news, it is nevertheless interesting to see how celebrities, like politicians, are related to one another. Furthermore, I imagine having the job of celebrity genealogist is a fun one to have. It’s a shame these four could not have been among the celebrities featured on a fourth season of Who Do You Think You Are?, which was cancelled after only three seasons earlier this year.
