104 Years Ago Today

Delmar and Pauline Kernan

On August 3, 1908, one hundred and four years ago today, Delmar Clair Kernan (1908-1979), my paternal great grandfather, was born in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA.

Delmar was the third of twelve children born to George Edward Kernan (1884-1960) and Maudena Elizabeth “Lizzie” Stearns (1885-1936). In 1929, he married Maxine Elizabeth Davis (1912-1992) in Portland; and had two children with her, Deldalyn and William, before their divorce in 1948.

In 1950, Delmar married Pauline Katherine (Rains) Rowlands (1913-1997) in Portland. Delmar was a driver for a meat company until an injury in about 1955 forced him to seek different employment as salesman of prefab-homes, which he did until he retired.

Delmar passed away in 1979 in Sherwood, Washington Co., Oregon, and was buried at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.

  1. Thanks for adding the fact about an injury causing a career change. It really points out how adversity can affect the lives of our ancestors. Also a great example for us to continue on when we have difficulties.

  2. Lovely post and a nice idea. My father was born in 1899 and I am only 58. I have often thought about writing a book about his and my life. He actually shook hands with Buffalo Bill in 1904. Greetings from Thailand. K
